In this series, we share some of our favourite all natural skincare regimes and ingredients used in different countries and cultures around the world.
Benefits of Turmeric
Turmeric is a root spice that has become well known for its amazing uses and properties. Used for centuries in many Asian and African cultures - research has now proved its many cosmetic and therapeutic uses and has become newly popular in Western health food stores and markets. Turmeric is most notably known for it’s active ingredient compound curcumin - which is a potent antioxidant anti-inflammatory agent. The health benefits have been widely documented including preventing heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.
In terms of beauty - the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric make it ideal for brightening, exfoliating and healing the skin. It adds suppleness to skin, brightens complexion, fades hyper-pigmentation and gives skin a radiant glow.
Turmeric Mask Recipe
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon gram/chickpea flour
- 1 teaspoon plain yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- optional: 1-2 teaspoon honey
Mix all of the ingredients into a bowl. Apply to skin before bed for 20 minutes 1-3 times per week. Rinse thoroughly.
Pro tip: turmeric stains! Make sure you rinse your face and sink thoroughly after use. There is also a possibilty of yellow tint to the skin for a few minutes, which is why we recommend wash the face with a cleanser after the mask.
